ENGLISH/JOURNALISM INTERNSHIP

Great hands on experience and a real resume builder! An exciting opportunity to work on the only monthly computer magazine in the Capital Region. Writing, editing, developing feature story material including; The Story of the Month, editorials, product review, Internet news and special event coverage for a 32 page plus magazine and web site. The ideal candidate will be a self starter, with strong written and oral communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Internships are available for Fall 2001, Spring 2002, and Summer 2002.

Tri-city Computing Magazine, a seven  year old monthly publication devoted to covering the  computer and technology industries, with a focus on events that affect New York and the Capital Region.  We publish a 32 page print edition and a Web version. With over 18,000 monthly readers in the Capital District we support our community through a unique and participatory  business ethic. These are a detailed list of some of the tasks that the intern would be required to complete

Internet Reviews

These review will be 50-300 words in length. For example: Web site review of MapInfo, www.mapinfo.com (local software publisher), or Sysco Foods, www.sysco.com (local food distributor). They will be published in the print and Internet versions of the magazine. Research will require Internet searching and/or telephone interviews. They are best submitted in text and/or E-mail form. Articles should be proofed and conform to writer's guidelines before submission. (1)

Writing Reviews

These review will be 300-900 words in length. For example: id Systems Quake (game), WebPainter (graphics program). They will be published in the print and Internet versions of the magazine. Research will require installing computer hardware or software. Research may require Internet searching, or telephone interviews. They are best submitted in text and/or E-mail form. Articles should be proofed and conform to writer's guidelines before submission. A byline is provided for reviews of 600+ words. (2)

Writing Arcticles

These articles will be 300-1500 words in length. For example: Computer usage in Albany libraries, College freshman computer skills versus seniors. They will be published in the print and Internet versions of the magazine. Research may require Internet searching, telephone and/or live interviews, attending press conferences. They are best submitted in text and/or E-mail form. Articles should be proofed and conform to writer's guidelines before submission. A byline is provided for articles of 600+ words. Writing assignment suggestions will be posted on-line. (2)

Writing Columns

Columns are regular features in the magazine. They require a stable theme. Each article should be approximately the same length. Minimum three segments For example: Most popular chat rooms at Skidmore, then SUNYA, then Union. (2)

Department Editor

The editor's role is to gather or create articles and advertising which creates a self contained department. For example: Music and Arts department would include article on local bands, music software. Area bands would be contacted for interviews. Musicians would be surveyed for what software they are using. A list of target advertisers would be gathered and contacted . (4)

Department Online Editor

Using Web layout tools (e.g. NetObjects Fusion) the Editor creates compelling Web pages using the articles from a department and the archives of that department. For example: take the articles from Music department add MIDI files and publish on our Web site. Compile a list of target on-line advertisors and contact them with a media kit. Creation of publicity and media kits are part of the editor's duties. (5)

Channel Editor

On-line users demand an ever more exciting experience. The Channel editor will add interactive features to our Web. For example: adding search engine. (2-10)

Other Duties

Interns will perform support duties including answering phones, data entry, delivering papers, reviewing locations.
